SWINGING SQUARES of Rhode Island
By George & Marge Barrett
We always hope to get a big crowd at our first
dance of the new season. A few dancers come in the door at first, but as it
gets closer to eight o’clock we count a couple of squares. At five past
eight a bus pulls up with two clubs on board. It was a sight to see
everyone with smiley faces as they came thru the door. Kat ,( our
Chairperson ) was there to greet everyone with a Lei, because the theme for
the dance was Luau and most of our club members dressed with Hawaiian
dresses and shirts. Steve and Stephanie were there to collect admission. The
dancing was great with eleven and one half squares on the floor.
Everything got settled down a bit, we found out that Moe and Donna brought
the HAYLOFT STEPPERS along with their caller, Matt McGovern. Matt had a
chance to show his skills as he belted out the calls to the dancers. We
also had the South Windsor Squares with their caller, Bob Smith. He also
had a chance to show the dancers what he could do with the mike. He was
great. Of course we think our own caller, Bob Butler is the greatest.
Henry Barry does a great job with the Rounds. He told me one time that he
had been dancing since 1963 and has been Cueing since 1965, a long time.
We also had Lori and Dave Morin from the Ruffles
“N” Beaus SDC. She is their caller and her husband Dave helps her keep the
club running smooth. Mike and Joyce Alexander, Cuers for the Town Howlers
were also dancing. Mike had a chance to Cue and show the dancers just what
he could do. Mixed in there was also a raid by the Side Splitters so we
will have to go back to retrieve from their club.
Clyde Solmon didn’t know that he was celebrating
his 91st birthday at the dance but Marge made sure that he is
remembered. Clyde and Jo also celebrated their 65th wedding
anniversary.
We had a reporter and a photographer from the Valley
Breeze taking pictures and writing a story about the square dancing.
The clubs that we had visiting were Hayloft
Steppers, South Windsor Squares, Fairs and Squares, Side Splitters, Town
Howlers, Ruffles “N” Beaus, and also our own Swinging Squares.
What a really great night, THANK YOU to
all the DANCERS that came.
