Thank
you to everyone who supported today's Convention Kick-Off dance at the
Hayloft by their presence and/or their moral
support. The dance was a great success. The annual New England Square and Round Dance
Conventions live on because YOU, the dancers, continue to support them
and the related activities like today's dance.
Thank
You.
See
you soon for the actual convention!!

An Open
Letter from Matt & Eleanor
What a
wonderful surprise! On June 10th we opened the door at Hayloft
Steppers to many friends and family all gathered to celebrate us as we
prepare for marriage. The floating floor was decorated in our favorite
colors pink and purple. The stage had a huge banner congratulating us, and
of course the kitchen was filled with delicious food. Fourteen Squares
filled the Hayloft and danced the afternoon away to Lenny Stratton, Mike
Petitbon, and Leo Boudreau. The gathering of people made us feel truly
loved, but to our surprise, we also found out that the proceeds of the
dance would go to us! We are overwhelmed by the love and generosity all of
our square dance friends gave to us. We are blessed to have such great
friends.
Thanks
a million and we look forward to seeing you in a square!
Matt
& Eleanor

DANCE AT ND
LONG TERM CARE DEMO MAR 25 07
|
It’s a
nursing home all right but at 2 PM Sunday, March 25, Notre Dame Long Term
Nursing Home was “transformed” into a joyous, fun filled Square Dance Hall!
Apprehensive, quizzical faces turned into beaming smiles and clapping hands
as the Hay Loft Steppers from Sturbridge put on a glittering show for the
residents at the facility recreation hall. For an hour all ailments, pains
and aches appeared to have vanished during the dazzling performance of the
western attired square dancers as they responded to calls of dynamic outstanding
caller Matt McGovern.
ND Long
Term Care Activities Director, Jadranka Grek was overly impressed with the
performance and responded “everyone was extremely amazed at the
instantaneous, split second interaction of the dancers to the uptempo, fast
track calls belted out by youthful caller.
|
|
Square
dancing originated in the 1950’s and has evolved into a wide variety of
music styles. Contrary to yesteryear’s square dancing, the 2000 version of
Square Dancing is a hybrid of western and fast track, up beat dancing .A form
of low impact aerobic exercise, a person can burn 300 calories during an
evening of dancing.
“It was
wonderful emotional therapy for our residents and gave them a temporary
feeling of euphoria’ commented Jadrenka. “ We look forward to an encore in
the foreseeable future.”
Of
particular significance was the person who “called” -Matt McGovern.- who
began calling less than 2 years ago .A gifted 13 year old youngster, Matt
has already turned the heads of his “senior” peers. His style is
truly dynamic, and challenging, backed by modern, upbeat .music that echoes the
2000 era. Even at his youthful age Matt has started a club in Ludlow and has his own
web site (WWW.mattswebplace.com (email
McGovernmatt@verizon.net)

People have
commented that “problems seem to disappear” when dancing.” “ It’s a great
way to make new friends “ It’s also an opportunity to develop strong
social ties with all levels of society An American art, Square Dancing is
done universally and all calls must be given in English,-even in
countries such as Japan or Sweden..
According
to research, one can add 10 years to his/her life by square dancing and
it’s regarded an anti oxidant to dementia.
Something
else. Square Dancing is not strictly for the “over the hill” crowd. As
mentioned above, Square Dancing has come up to the 21st century with
innovations and upbeat music ( Some slower paced more “traditional“ dancing
is also done for those with mobility issues).Equally significant, with just
12 lessons one can be dancing the Mainstream Level.

Hello
everyone:
Just a little note about the Hayloft Steppers. We are in the beginning of a
new dance year and we are off to a great start. Our beginner’s class has
many new dancers, about two squares. We are also able to have a plus class.
A BIG thank you to everyone who is helping with classes. We are a family
club and have members as young as 8 years old and other members in their
90’s. We all have a great time dancing and learning together. Some times
the younger ones teach us older ones something new. The Hayloft likes to
travel and have a fun time while we are out. We are known for having a
great time. The Hayloft encourages our teens and younger ones to join us
when we travel. They have a great time and look forward to the next time
they can join us. We have done a few demos this year and I think we got
some new dancers out of them. We are going to the nursing home in West Brookfield to spend some time with the people
who live there. We will do some dancing and spend time talking with them.
Everyone is invited to join the fun.

PAST AND FUTURE IN REVIEW
|
|
This
past year we had our quilt raffle and it was a great success. We sold all the allotted tickets. The raffle was drawn at our November
dance and the quilt was won by Stacy Peck.
Congratulations Stacy. We
have replaced our electrical system and all is working well. We were very fortunate to have Moe
Bracken available to assist us during this difficult time. Thanks Moe for your continued support.
We
participated in a Mystery Ride on April 22nd with dinner prior to leaving for our
unknown destination. We had a fun
filled evening of dancing at the Manchester Square Dance Club in Connecticut. Hayloft took three squares We will be doing a demo/fun night at
Jumptown in Athol on May 19th to benefit Relay for Life Cancer
Walk. This is a fundraiser for
Curves of Athol. We will be marching
again this year in the Sturbridge Memorial Day Parade (May 29th)
at 9 a.m. If you would like to march with us see
Judy Eckert for meeting times. We
will also do a demo at St. Mary’s in Ware again this year (June 17th) We have had a great time doing these
demos which we hope help promote square dancing in general and the Hayloft
specifically. Hope to see some of
you there in the future. So long for now.
See you in a square.
